On a July afternoon in 1921 a group of Gering citizens met in the park for the purpose of honoring the pioneers who passed by here in the 1840s; and the early settlers who came here in the mid 1880s to make a home in the land sometimes referred to as "The Great American Desert." The celebration continues today for the purpose of honoring those who through their perseverance and courage have developed this area. Oregon Trail Days has evolved into a four day celebration that brings many thousands of past residents and visitors to the area each July.
